David Thomson

The 2013 recipient of the Statistical Society of Canada Award for Impact of Applied and Collaborative Work is Professor David J. Thomson, Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Queen’s University, Kingston. The award recognizes outstanding contributions by members of the SSC in collaborative research and applied work, the importance of which derives primarily from its relatively recent impact on a subject area outside of the statistical sciences, on an area of application, or on an organization.

 

Derek Bingham, CRM-SSC Prize in Statistics 2013

Derek Bingham

Derek Bingham was born in 1968 in Pointe Claire, Quebec.  He lived in the Montreal region (from Beloeil to Dollard) while growing up, with a brief one-year stay in Hawaii.  His academic trajectory includes a DEC at Champlain College in 1988 and a BSc in Applied Mathematics at Concordia University in 1991.  After several co-op jobs that were entirely statistical in nature, he decided to pursue a MSc in Statistics at Carleton University where he received the Senate Medal in 1994 for his thesis work.

The Canadian Journal of Statistics Award is presented each year by the Statistical Society of Canada to the author(s) of an article published in the Journal, in recognition of the outstanding quality of the paper’s methodological innovation and presentation. This year’s winner is the article entitled “Information borrowing methods for covariate-adjusted ROC curve” (Volume 40, no. 3, pp. 569-587) by Zhong Guan, Jing Qin and Biao Zhang.

Bei Chen est la récipiendaire du Prix Pierre-Robillard 2011 de la Société statistique du Canada. Ce prix est attribué à la meilleure thèse doctorale en probabilité ou statistique soutenue dans une université canadienne au cours de l’année. La thèse de Bei Chen s’intitule « Linearization Methods in Time Series Analysis ». Elle a été rédigée à la University of Waterloo sous la supervision de Bovas Abraham et Yulia Gel.

Professor Changbao Wu, from the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo, is the 2012 winner of the CRM-SSC Prize. Awarded annually by the Centre de recherches mathématiques (Montréal) and the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC), this prestigious prize recognizes a statistical scientist's professional accomplishments in research during the first fifteen years after earning a doctorate.

This year's winner is the article entitled "Nonparametric regression with cross-classified responses" (vol. 39, no. 4, pp. 591-609) by Chong Gu and Ping Ma.

At its Annual Meeting held in Guelph, Ontario, June 3-6, the Statistical Society of Canada announced that David A. Binder is the 2012 recipient of the Award for Impact of Applied and Collaborative Work. The award recognizes outstanding contributions by SSC members in collaborative research and applied work, the importance of which derives primarily from its relatively recent impact on a subject area outside of the statistical sciences, on an area of application, or on an organization.

Geoffrey Fong, David Hammond and Mary Thompson are the 2012 recipients of the Lise Manchester Award. This biennial award is given by the Statistical Society of Canada in commemoration of the late Dr. Lise Manchester's abiding interest in using statistical methods to study matters of relevance to society. The award recognizes excellence in statistical research which considers problems of public interest and which is potentially useful for formation of Canadian public policy.

Robert Tibshirani, SSC Gold Medalist 2012

Robert Tibshirani

Robert John Tibshirani, a professor in the Department of Health Research and Policy and in the Department of Statistics at Stanford University is the winner of the 2012 Gold Medal of the Statistical Society of Canada. This award is the highest distinction bestowed by the SSC. It is given annually to a Canadian statistician or probabilist who has made outstanding research contributions to statistical sciences and is intended to honor a leader in the field.

Román Viveros-Aguilera, a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McMaster University, is the recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Service Award of the Statistical Society of Canada. The announcement was made at the opening of the Society's Annual Meeting held in Guelph, ON, June 3-6, 2012. The award recognizes a member of the SSC who has made substantial contributions to the running or welfare of the SSC over a period of several years. It rewards devotion and service to statistics in Canada as shown by exceptional service to the SSC.

This prestigious annual award is intended to honor a Canadian probabilist or statistician who has made substantial contributions to the development of his/her area of research through methodological achievements and applications.

The 2011 SSC Distinguished Service Award is conferred to David A. Binder, retired Director General of the Methodology Branch at Statistics Canada. The announcement was made at the Society’s Annual Meeting held in Wolfville, NS on June 12-15. The distinction is awarded to an SSC member who has made substantial contributions to the running or welfare of the SSC, over a period of several years.

The award recognizes outstanding contributions by a member of the SSC that have made relatively recent impact on an organization or a subject area that is not cognate with the statistical sciences.

Grace Y. Yi, CRM-SSC Prize in Statistics 2010

Grace Y. Yi

Grace Y. Yi, Professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo, is the 2010 winner of the CRM-SSC Prize. Within 10 years of her Ph.D., she has contributed in a significant way to the development of statistical methods for longitudinal studies and for the analysis of time-to-event data, especially for the treatment of missing observations and measurement errors.
