The Canadian Journal of Statistics Award is presented each year by the Statistical Society of Canada to the author(s) of an article published in the Journal, in recognition of the outstanding quality of the methodological innovation and presentation. This year's winner is the article entitled "Semiparametric methods for survival analysis of case-control data subject to dependent censoring" (Volume 42, no. 3, pp. 365-383) by Douglas E. Schaubel, Hui Zhang, John D. Kalbfleisch, and Xu Shu.

John D. Kalbfleisch

John D. (Jack) Kalbfleisch, Professor Emeritus of Biostatistics at the University of Michigan, has been named an Honorary Member of the Statistical Society of Canada. This award is intended to honor an individual who has made exceptional contributions to the development of the statistical sciences in Canada and whose work has had a major impact in this country.

 

Matías Salibián-Barrera, CRM-SSC Prize in Statistics 2015

Matías Salibián-Barrera

The CRM-SSC Prize in statistics is awarded annually by the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) and the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC). It is awarded in recognition of a statistical scientist's professional accomplishments in research during the first fifteen years after having received a doctorate. This year's winner is Matías Salibián-Barrera of the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Ying Yan, Pierre Robillard Award 2015

Ying Yan

Dr Ying Yan is the winner of the 2014 Pierre Robillard Award of the Statistical Society of Canada. This prize recognizes the best PhD thesis in probability or statistics defended at a Canadian university in a given year. Ying's thesis is entitled "Statistical Methods on Survival Data with Measurement Error". It was written at the University of Waterloo under the supervision of Grace Yi.

Agnes Herzberg, Lise Manchester Award 2014

Agnes Herzberg

Professor Agnes Herzberg is the 2014 recipient of the Lise Manchester Award. This biennial award is given by the Statistical Society of Canada in commemoration of the late Dr Lise Manchester’s abiding interest in using statistical methods to study matters of relevance to society. The award recognizes excellence in statistical research which considers problems of public interest and which is potentially useful for formation of Canadian public policy.

This year’s winner is the article entitled “Self-concordance for empirical likelihood” (Volume 41, no. 3, pp. 387-397) by Art B. Owen.

John Petkau, SSC Award for Impact of Applied and Collaborative Work 2014

John Petkau

The 2014 recipient of the Statistical Society of Canada Award for Impact of Applied and Collaborative Work is A. John Petkau, Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. The award recognizes outstanding contributions by members of the SSC in collaborative research and applied work, the importance of which derives primarily from its relatively recent impact on a subject area outside of the statistical sciences, on an area of application, or on an organization.

Mary Thompson, Distinguished Service Award 2014

Mary Thompson

Professor Mary Thompson is the recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Service Award from the Statistical Society of Canada. This award honours an individual who has played an important and substantial role in fostering growth and success of the Canadian Statistical Sciences community through leadership in the SSC. Mary’s many years of strong and effective leadership have greatly benefited our society and this award is a fitting recognition for her commitment to our discipline and profession.

David Thomson, SSC Award for Impact of Applied and Collaborative Work 2013

David Thomson

The 2013 recipient of the Statistical Society of Canada Award for Impact of Applied and Collaborative Work is Professor David J. Thomson, Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Queen’s University, Kingston. The award recognizes outstanding contributions by members of the SSC in collaborative research and applied work, the importance of which derives primarily from its relatively recent impact on a subject area outside of the statistical sciences, on an area of application, or on an organization.

 

Derek Bingham, CRM-SSC Prize in Statistics 2013

Derek Bingham

Derek Bingham was born in 1968 in Pointe Claire, Quebec.  He lived in the Montreal region (from Beloeil to Dollard) while growing up, with a brief one-year stay in Hawaii.  His academic trajectory includes a DEC at Champlain College in 1988 and a BSc in Applied Mathematics at Concordia University in 1991.  After several co-op jobs that were entirely statistical in nature, he decided to pursue a MSc in Statistics at Carleton University where he received the Senate Medal in 1994 for his thesis work.

Bei Chen

Bei Chen is the winner of the 2011 Pierre Robillard Award of the Statistical Society of Canada. This prize recognizes the best PhD thesis in probability or statistics defended at a Canadian university in a given year. Bei Chen's thesis is entitled "Linearization Methods in Time Series Analysis". It was written at the University of Waterloo under the supervision of Bovas Abraham and Yulia Gel.

Professor Changbao Wu, from the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo, is the 2012 winner of the CRM-SSC Prize. Awarded annually by the Centre de recherches mathématiques (Montréal) and the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC), this prestigious prize recognizes a statistical scientist's professional accomplishments in research during the first fifteen years after earning a doctorate.
