The 2013 recipient of the Statistical Society of Canada Award for Impact of Applied and Collaborative Work is Professor David J. Thomson, Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Queen’s University, Kingston. The award recognizes outstanding contributions by members of the SSC in collaborative research and applied work, the importance of which derives primarily from its relatively recent impact on a subject area outside of the statistical sciences, on an area of application, or on an organization.

Derek Bingham was born in 1968 in Pointe Claire, Quebec.  He lived in the Montreal region (from Beloeil to Dollard) while growing up, with a brief one-year stay in Hawaii.  His academic trajectory includes a DEC at Champlain College in 1988 and a BSc in Applied Mathematics at Concordia University in 1991.  After several co-op jobs that were entirely statistical in nature, he decided to pursue a MSc in Statistics at Carleton University where he received the Senate Medal in 1994 for his thesis work.

The Recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Service Award of the Statistical Society of Canada is Professor Nancy Reid. The Dis­tinguished Service Award is intended to honour a person who contributed substantially and over a period of several years to the operation or welfare of the SSC.

The Canadian Journal of Statistics Award is presented each year by the Statistical Society of Canada to the author(s) of an article published in the Journal, in recognition of the outstanding quality of the paper’s methodological innovation and presentation. This year’s winner is the article entitled “Information borrowing methods for covariate-adjusted ROC curve” (Volume 40, no. 3, pp. 569-587) by Zhong Guan, Jing Qin and Biao Zhang.

Bei Chen est la récipiendaire du Prix Pierre-Robillard 2011 de la Société statistique du Canada. Ce prix est attribué à la meilleure thèse doctorale en probabilité ou statistique soutenue dans une université canadienne au cours de l’année. La thèse de Bei Chen s’intitule « Linearization Methods in Time Series Analysis ». Elle a été rédigée à la University of Waterloo sous la supervision de Bovas Abraham et Yulia Gel.
 

Professor Changbao Wu, from the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo, is the 2012 winner of the CRM-SSC Prize. Awarded annually by the Centre de recherches mathématiques (Montréal) and the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC), this prestigious prize recognizes a statistical scientist's professional accomplishments in research during the first fifteen years after earning a doctorate.

The Canadian Journal of Statistics Award is presented each year by the Statistical Society of Canada to the author(s) of an article published in the Journal, in recognition of the outstanding quality of the paper's methodological innovation and presentation. This year's winner is the article entitled "Nonparametric regression with cross-classified responses" (vol. 39, no. 4, pp. 591-609) by Chong Gu and Ping Ma.

At its Annual Meeting held in Guelph, Ontario, June 3-6, the Statistical Society of Canada announced that David A. James O. Ramsay, professeur émérite à l’Université McGill, a été nommé membre honoraire de la Société statistique du Canada. La SSC confère ce titre aux statisticiens qui se sont distingués par leurs contributions au développement de la discipline au pays. La nomination a été annoncée lors du congrès annuel 2012 de la Société à Guelph (Ontario).
 

Geoffrey Fong, David Hammond et Mary Thompson sont les lauréats 2012 du prix Lise-Manchester. Ce prix bisannuel est offert par la Société statistique du Canada pour rappeler l’intérêt marqué que feu Dr Lise Manchester portait à l’étude de sujets de société au moyen de méthodes statistiques. Le prix souligne l’excellence de travaux de recherche statistique portant sur des problèmes d’intérêt général et susceptibles d’influencer l’élaboration des politiques publiques au Canada.

Román Viveros-Aguilera, a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McMaster University, is the recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Service Award of the Statistical Society of Canada. The announcement was made at the opening of the Society's Annual Meeting held in Guelph, ON, June 3-6, 2012. The award recognizes a member of the SSC who has made substantial contributions to the running or welfare of the SSC over a period of several years. It rewards devotion and service to statistics in Canada as shown by exceptional service to the SSC.

Edward Andrew Susko, Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Dalhousie University, is the 2011 winner of the CRM-SSC Prize. Ed has been at the forefront of the development of probabilistic and statistical methods across the field of genetics and computational biology, and is recognized as an international leader.
