Professor Abdel H. El-Shaarawi is the 2010 recipient of the SSC Award for Impact of Applied and Collaborative Work. The award recognizes outstanding contributions by a member of the SSC that have made relatively recent impact on an organization or a subject area that is not cognate with the statistical sciences.

David R. Brillinger, professeur de statistique à l’Université de Californie à Berkeley, est dorénavant membre honoraire de la SSC. Cette nomination, rendue publique lors du congrès annuel de la Société tenu à Québec en mai 2010, souligne la carrière exceptionnelle du professeur Brillinger et sa contribution au développement de la statistique au Canada.
 

Grace Y. Yi, Professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo, is the 2010 winner of the CRM-SSC Prize. Within 10 years of her Ph.D., she has contributed in a significant way to the development of statistical methods for longitudinal studies and for the analysis of time-to-event data, especially for the treatment of missing observations and measurement errors.

The Canadian Journal of Statistics Award is presented each year by the Statistical Society of Canada to the author(s) of an article published in the Journal, in recognition of the outstanding quality of the paper’s methodological innovation and presentation.

The Gold Medal of the Statistical Society of Canada is awarded this year to Louis-Paul Rivest, professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Université Laval. This award is the highest distinction bestowed by the SSC. It is given to a Canadian probabilist or statistician who has made substantial contributions to the development of his/her area of research through methodological work or applications. The Gold Medal is intended to honour outstanding current leaders in their field.

Michelle Qian Zhou is the winner of the 2009 Pierre Robillard Award of the Statistical Society of Canada. This prize recognizes the best Ph.D. thesis in probability or statistics defended at a Canadian university in a given year.

The 2010 Distinguished Service Award is awarded to Paul Cabilio, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Statistics at Acadia University, Wolfville. This award is given at most once a year to a member of the Statistical Society of Canada who contributed substantially and over a period of several years to the operation or welfare of the SSC. 

Le professeur Raymond F. Currie est le lauréat du prix Lise-Manchester pour 2010. Ce prix bisannuel est offert par la Société statistique du Canada pour rappeler l’intérêt marqué que feu Dr Lise Manchester portait à l’étude de sujets de société au moyen de méthodes statistiques. Le prix souligne l’excellence de travaux de recherche statistique portant sur des problèmes d’intérêt général et susceptibles d’influencer l’élaboration des politiques publiques au Canada.

The Pierre Robillard Award for the best PhD thesis in the areas of probability and statistics defended in Canada in 2008 has been awarded to Dr. Baojiang Chen.

The Statistical Society of Canada announced today that Professor Christian Léger has been awarded the 2009 SSC Distinguished Service Award. This award is given to a member of the SSC who has made substantial contributions to the running or welfare of the Society over a period of several years.

La Société statistique du Canada (SSC) a annoncé qu’elle conférait à George P.H. Styan le titre de membre honoraire. La SSC accorde ce titre aux statisticiens qui se sont distingués d’une manière exceptionnelle par leurs contributions au développement de la statistique au Canada.
 

Hugh obtained his B.Sc. in Mathematics in 1990 at Acadia University; he then went to the University of Waterloo where he obtained his M.Sc. in 1991 and his Ph.D. in 1994, both in Statistics. His Ph.D. thesis was written under the supervision of C. F. J. Wu and M. S. Hamada. He was then appointed in the Graduate School of Business of the University of Chicago as an assistant professor. He stayed in Chicago for three years and came back to Canada, at the University of Waterloo in 1997. He spent seven years in Waterloo, as an assistant and an associate professor.
