Grace Y. Yi, CRM-SSC Prize in Statistics 2010

Grace Y. Yi

Grace Y. Yi, Professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo, is the 2010 winner of the CRM-SSC Prize. Within 10 years of her Ph.D., she has contributed in a significant way to the development of statistical methods for longitudinal studies and for the analysis of time-to-event data, especially for the treatment of missing observations and measurement errors.

The 2010 Distinguished Service Award is awarded to Paul Cabilio, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Statistics at Acadia University, Wolfville. This award is given at most once a year to a member of the Statistical Society of Canada who contributed substantially and over a period of several years to the operation or welfare of the SSC.

Le professeur Raymond F. Currie est le lauréat du prix Lise-Manchester pour 2010. Ce prix bisannuel est offert par la Société statistique du Canada pour rappeler l’intérêt marqué que feu Dr Lise Manchester portait à l’étude de sujets de société au moyen de méthodes statistiques. Le prix souligne l’excellence de travaux de recherche statistique portant sur des problèmes d’intérêt général et susceptibles d’influencer l’élaboration des politiques publiques au Canada.

Hugh A. Chipman

Hugh obtained his B.Sc. in Mathematics in 1990 at Acadia University; he then went to the University of Waterloo where he obtained his M.Sc. in 1991 and his Ph.D. in 1994, both in Statistics. His Ph.D. thesis was written under the supervision of C. F. J. Wu and M. S. Hamada. He was then appointed in the Graduate School of Business of the University of Chicago as an assistant professor. He stayed in Chicago for three years and came back to Canada, at the University of Waterloo in 1997. He spent seven years in Waterloo, as an assistant and an associate professor.

The Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) today announced that the recipient of the SSC Award for Impact of Applied and Collaborative Work is Professor Rick Routledge of Simon Fraser University. This award recognizes outstanding contributions by SSC members in collaborative research and applications to a specific field outside of statistics.

Dr Ivan P. Fellegi

Ivan P. Fellegi, statisticien en chef du Canada retraité depuis le 16 juin, est maintenant membre honoraire de la SSC. La Société accorde ce titre aux statisticiens qui se sont distingués d’une manière exceptionnelle par leurs contributions au développement de la statistique au Canada. L’annonce officielle de cette nomination a été faite à Ottawa par Christian Genest, président de la SSC, lors de la journée d’ouverture du Congrès annuel 2008 de la SSC.

The Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) today announced that Professor Stephen Fienberg has been named the first recipient of the Lise Manchester Award. This biennieal award is to commemorate the late Dr Lise Manchester's abiding interest in making use of statistical methods to provide insights into matters of relevance to society at large. This new award recognizes excellence in 'state of the art' statistical research which considers problems of public interest and which is potentially useful for formation of Canadian public policy.

The Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) today announced that the first recipient of the SSC Award for Impact of Applied and Collaborative Work is Professor Stephen Walter. This award recognizes outstanding contributions by SSC members in collaborative research and applied work. The award is intended for contributions that have made relatively recent impact on an organization or a subject area that is not cognate with the statistical sciences.

The Statistical Society of Canada today announced that Angelo Canty, Anthony Davison, David Hinkley and Valérie Ventura have been awarded The Canadian Journal of Statistics Award for the best paper published in the journal for 2006, judged according to excellence, innovation and presentation.

La Société statistique du Canada (SSC) a annoncé aujourd’hui qu’elle avait décerné le prix Pierre- Robillard, pour la meilleure thèse de doctorat soutenue au Canada dans les domaines de la probabilité et de la statistique, à Mylene Bédard. L’identité du récipiendaire a été formellement annoncée par la présidente de la SSC, Charmaine Dean, à l’Université Memorial de Terre-Neuve à St. John’s, lors du premier jour du Congrès annuel 2007 de la Société.
