SSC 2017: Travel Support Program for Students
Dear members,
The SSC is again awarding travel supplements for students from Canadian Universities attending the 2017 SSC meeting. These awards are funded by the Society and six of its sections: Actuarial Science, Statistical Education, Biostatistics, Survey Methods, Business and Industrial Statistics, and Probability.
2017 Student Research Presentation Award
Awards will be given at the 2017 SSC Annual Meeting at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg for research presentations made by students. Awards will be given for oral and poster presentations. Entries will be judged on the quality of both the presentation and the underlying research. The awards consist of a certificate and a cash prize.
Upcoming award deadlines for Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies awards
The Fisher award is given in very high recognition of meritorious achievement and scholarship in statistical science and recognizes highly significant impact of statistical methods on scientific investigations. Well, it has been a very busy few months for our Society: continued development of the website, planning for next year's meeting in Winnipeg, preparing for the fundraising drive, ... the list goes on! Allow me to elaborate on these.

Nancy Reid to Give 2016 Fisher Memorial Lecture
Professor Nancy Reid, FRSC, can add one more accolade to her already long list of honours. On October 27, 2016, she will give this year's Fisher Memorial Lecture at the Royal Statistical Society in London (UK). The title of her lecture is "Statistical Science and Data Science: where do we go from here?"
Census at School Canada Opened for Another Year
The Census at School Canada project opened on Labour Day for another year of Canadian students collecting information about themselves and comparing their class to students from across Canada and other participating countries. Census at School is an international classroom project designed to engage elementary and secondary school students in statistical reasoning.
