Welcome to the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon!
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Saskatchewan is thrilled to host the 2025 SSC Annual Meeting and to welcome you to our vibrant city of Saskatoon. This year’s event is particularly special for us as it marks the 20th anniversary since the SSC Annual Meeting was last held on our campus. We are delighted to offer this wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow statisticians, share innovative research, and explore the vibrant community of Saskatoon. We hope you enjoy your time here and make the most of the engaging sessions and networking opportunities.
Land acknowledgement
The University of Saskatchewan is located on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis. We pay our respects to the First Nations and Métis ancestors of this place and reaffirm our relationship with one another. We acknowledge our responsibility to honour and learn from the Indigenous peoples, cultures, values, and languages that belong to this land.
Stellar location
Welcome to Saskatoon, the vibrant home of the University of Saskatchewan! Nestled in the heart of the South Saskatchewan River Valley, Saskatoon is the largest city in Saskatchewan with a 2021 population of 266,141. Known for its welcoming atmosphere, the city attracts people from across Canada and the world, making it an ideal place to live, work, and raise a family. Saskatoon experiences four distinct seasons, with temperatures ranging from -30°C in winter to +30°C in summer. In May, the weather is mild and pleasant, with average temperatures between 7°C and 17°C, and daytime highs around 19°C. The city enjoys about 2381 hours of sunlight annually, offering plenty of sunny days, though it is wise to carry a light jacket and umbrella for occasional rain showers and cooler evenings. The climate’s low humidity makes winter temperatures feel warmer and summer temperatures cooler.
Saskatoon is easily accessible via major highways and the John G. Diefenbaker International Airport, which handles over 60 flights daily. Taxi and bus services are available at the airport, and the VIA Rail station, located 8 km west of downtown, connects the city to Toronto and Vancouver. The South Saskatchewan River winds gracefully through the city, crossed by multiple bridges and accompanied by an 80-km trail perfect for walking, jogging, or biking. This scenic route offers a beautiful way to experience the city’s charm. Saskatoon is alive with new restaurants, bars, breweries, and attractions.

About Department of Mathematics and Statistics
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at USask, established in 1907, was one of the original departments of the College of Arts and Science. Initially, the department provided mathematics education to all university students, offering both service and advanced courses. By 1913, it had its first Honours graduates and began offering Master’s degrees. Over time, the department expanded to include pure and applied mathematics as well as statistics, leading to its renaming as the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in 1991, reflecting the growing importance of statistics in its academic and research programs.
Students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics build a robust foundation in both statistical and mathematical principles, with opportunities to specialize in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics. The department offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs, including M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in both Mathematics and Statistics. The department is home to 21 faculty members, including 7 specializing in statistics and probability, whose research interests span areas such as big omics data analysis, Bayesian inference, bioinformatics, biostatistics, longitudinal data analysis, machine learning, missing data and measurement error problems, queuing networks and applied probability models, and survival data analysis. Known for its strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research and collaboration, the department addresses complex problems in fields such as quantum innovation, medicine, economics, social sciences, computer science, and engineering. Students benefit from a supportive and stimulating academic environment, preparing them for successful careers in academia, industry, and beyond. The department’s graduates are recognized for their analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and strong work ethic, making significant contributions both locally and globally.

The Conference
An important feature of our meetings is the presentation of the abstracts and of the plenary session visual aids in both official languages. This translation was once again very ably carried out under the supervision of the Bilingualism Committee:
- Thierry Chekouo Tekougang, Chair
- Ismaila Baldé
- Anne-Sophie Charest
- Lajmi Lakhal Chaieb
- Mamadou Yauck
- Max Turgeon
and by the translators:
- Catherine Cox
- Olivier Tremblay
At the time that they submitted their abstract, speakers were asked to provide the language in which they intend to give their oral presentation as well as the language of their visual aids. Icons are used to provide this information for each paper. For the oral presentation, we have used the icons E and F , whereas E and F indicate the language of the visual aids. The letter inside identifies the language: E for English and F for French. Please note that the visual aids for the plenary talks will be provided in both languages.
