The 2003 recipient of the Gold Medal of the Statistical Society of Canada is Mary Thompson.
Mary is an internationally recognized scholar in Survey Sampling and Stochastic Processes. She has written a well-known book, Theory of Sample Surveys, published in 1997. She has done high quality research spanning a wide spectrum from epidemiology and ageing models through to stochastic differential equations and semimartingales. Her 1986 International Statistical Review paper “Parameters of super-population and survey population: Their relationship and estimation” with V.P. Godambe is a seminal piece. It is widely quoted for its justification of design-based framework when estimating unknown parameters from a parametric model. Mary is also wellknown as an excellent mentor and supervisor for graduate students. She has served the profession and her university over a long and very productive career.
“To Mary E. Thompson, for her outstanding research including that in sample surveys, stochastic processes, estimation theory and the foundation of statistics.”
