The Case Studies in Data Analysis Poster Competition will be held during the Annual Meeting at the University of Manitoba. The case studies are intended to provide enthusiastic teams of graduate and senior undergraduate students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge to the analysis of real-life datasets. Each participating team will choose to analyze one of two data sets described below. Each team is strongly encouraged to identify a faculty member to support the members as they develop their analytic approach and final presentation. Team members will work together to present a poster summarizing their methods and analysis results at the Annual Meeting.

Case Study #1: What is the Impact of Natural Disasters in Canada?

Teams that select this case study will use the Canadian Disaster Database to examine the impact of natural disasters on the Canadian population over time and across provinces/regions of Canada.

Case Study #2: What Clinical and Genetic Characteristics Predict Chronic Disease?

Teams that select this case study will explore the role of various clinical and genetic characteristics in predicting disease onset. Big Data analytic techniques could be considered for this case study.

The Committee of the Award for Case Studies in Data Analysis will consider the quality of both the analysis of the data and the presentation of the results in reaching its decision. The Committee reserves the right to decline to make an award for a given case study if the number of entries is insufficient.

Many thanks to members of the Case Studies in Data Analysis Committee for 2017 for their contributions: Dena Schanzer, Public Health Agency of Canda; Dr. Xu (Sunny) Wang of St. Francis Xavier University; Dr. Jean-François Angers of Université de Montréal.

Teams interested in participating in the competition must register by May 5, 2017 by e-mailing the Chair of the Case Studies in Data Analysis Committee, Dr. Lisa Lix (lisa.lix@umanitoba.ca).
