Groupe de biostatistique

Biostatistical work often requires the statistician to present methodological work to colleagues outside of statistics (e.g. clinicians). This skill is important in uptake of methodological innovations and in communicating the value of our work, yet is rarely taught in graduate programs.

This session will focus on techniques to communicate our methodological work to stakeholders from outside our field. Anna Heath (Scientist, The Hospital for Sick Children), will discuss graphical techniques for presenting statistical methods and results. Aya Mitani (Assistant Professor, University of Toronto) will demonstrate how to adapt a statistical presentation to a non-statistical audience by giving two presentations on the analysis of multi-level data with informative cluster size: one aimed at a statistical audience and the other presenting the same research, but this time designed for a non-statistical audience. The last half hour of the session will be reserved for discussion, drawing on the presentations as well as ideas from the audience in order to generate a list of top tips.

In addition to being of interest to many biostatisticians, we hope that this session will be useful for graduate students preparing for interviews and job talks with departments outside of the statistical sciences (e.g. Public Health, Medicine).
