Moving Up in Academic Ranks: Challenges and Strategies for Statisticians Involved in Interdisciplinary Research (1C-I5)
Invited Paper Session
Organizer and Chair: Wendy Lou (University of Toronto)
Statistical researchers in interdisciplinary environments face special challenges at performance evaluation, promotion, and tenure application. The extra effort needed to highlight creative/original statistical contributions to interdisciplinary research can be discouraging. Other issues include: (i) Reduced productivity while training oneself/students in new disciplines; (ii) Lack of appreciation for non-statistical journals or non-traditional research output; (iii) Conflicting expectations under joint appointments; (iv) Higher service demands including grant reviews and consulting. The panel will discuss strategies for showcasing successfully one’s interdisciplinary research contributions. The panelists will share their perspectives, including several administrative viewpoints, gathered from various research institutions in Canada and the US.

Some Thoughts on How to be More Successful (1D-I3)
Invited Paper Session
Organizer and Chair: Dena Schanzer (Public Health Agency of Canada)
In 2004, the SSC formally established the SSC Accreditation Program for professional statisticians who practice in Canada. Our 1st Accreditation sponsored session aims to engage our accredited members who apply statistical methods to solve real-world problems as well as our students and those who teach them in a discussion of soft skills for a successful career in the practice of statistics. Based on his 32-year career in industry and extensive involvement in professional societies, the speaker will provide a variety of career learnings and recommendations on how to be more successful in one’s career. The many benefits and advantages of professional society involvement will be presented, and the recent emphasis of the American Statistical Association on non-technical skills will be highlighted.
