Making the Case for Statistical Literacy: Recent ASA Initiatives  [PDF]

The American Statistical Association is championing statistical literacy at multiple levels. At the K-12 level, the GAISE Report is influencing curriculum standards in several states and has served to improve the statistics content of mathematics standards. The ASA is also developing a voice in statistics education policy by meeting with legislators to promote statistical literacy, and it is educating policy makers about the role of statisticians in areas such as climate change and election auditing. While many activities are carried out by its committees and staff, the ASA is also partnering with other associations and working directly with teachers.

In Canada, statistical literacy is promoted not only by academics and ministries of education, but also by Statistics Canada, the national statistical office. Through its award-winning Education Outreach Program, Statistics Canada offers students and teachers support in statistical learning with online resources that include E-STAT, Statistics: Power from Data! and Census at School. Census at School develops critical-thinking skills and an understanding of the statistical enquiry process. Students become 'little statisticians', completing the survey cycle from data collection to analysis and exploring data concepts with analytical software.
