Statistics Canada and the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) are deeply saddened by the news of the death of Tim Holt on November 15, 2022. Dr. Holt was an employee of Statistics Canada before he became the first Director of the Office for National Statistics of the United Kingdom. Dr. Holt was President of the Labour Statistics Congress (ILO) in 1997 and Vice-chair of the United Nations Statistical Commission from 1998 to 1999.
Dr. Holt made fundamental contributions to statistical science and his main interests were survey methods, sampling theory and official statistics. Dr. Ivan Fellegi wrote “I always regarded him as one of the bright stars of methodology. Of course, as you know, we co-authored one of my best known articles, but beyond that, I was fond of his low key wisdom, integrity, and sense of humour.”
Statistics Canada and SSC extend sincere condolences to his friends and family members.
