The Thirteenth annual Canadian Statistics Student Conference (CSSC) will take place on Saturday May 24, 2025 at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, one day before the Statistical Society of Canada's Annual Meeting begins. Registration and abstract submission will open in January 2025.
The co chairs for this conference are Amanda Qiu (University of Victoria) and Jay Sivathayalan (University of Waterloo) who are being assisted by a team of students from across the country.
This conference is all about engaging students through research presentations, statistical skills development workshops and talks, and an interactive career session with invited statisticians from different professional areas.
Student Research Presentations
Students will have the opportunity to present their research in statistics through oral and poster presentations, and network with others sharing their research interests.
Keynote Address
We’re pleased to announce a keynote address given by Dr. Alexandre Bouchard-Côté, a Professor of Statistics at the University of British Columbia. He received his PhD in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on computational Bayesian methods and applications in cancer genomics and phylogenetics. https://www.stat.ubc.ca/~bouchard/index.html
Scientific Workshop
Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on workshop during the conference, led by Dr. Pingzhao Hu. He is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, the Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences, and the Department of Computer Science at Western University. He is also an Associate Professor (Status-Only) of Biostatistics at the University of Toronto. Dr. Hu holds the prestigious Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Computational Approaches to Health Research. Dr. Hu's research focuses on developing and applying artificial intelligence (AI) and statistical methods to integrate multimodal health data (omics, imaging, and electronic medical records) for precision medicine. With over 180 peer-reviewed publications and more than 8,100 citations (H-index 46), Dr. Hu has received several notable honors, including the Interstellar Initiative Award from the New York Academy of Sciences and Japan's Agency for Medical Research and Development. He was also awarded the 2019 Terry G. Falconer Memorial Rh Institute Foundation Emerging Researcher Award and the Manitoba Medical Services Foundation Allen Rouse Basic Science Career Scientist award. Dr. Hu is an Academic Editor for PLOS Computational Biology. In addition to his research, Dr. Hu is an experienced mentor, with many of his trainees joining leading high-tech companies (e.g., Google, Microsoft, Amazon), and securing tenure-track faculty positions in Canada.
Career Panel
CSSC 2025 will include a career panel featuring representatives from academia, government, and industry. The panelists will be announced in the near future.
Social
As part of CSSC 2025, we will have social breaks between events and a networking lunch to engage with other students, invited speakers, and conference sponsors. At the end of the day, we will host a social event to conclude the conference.
Prizes
Prizes will be awarded in undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD levels for each of the following:
- Best Posters (Virtual) of the CSSC
- Best Posters (In-person) of the CSSC
- Best Oral Presentations (In-person) of the CSSC
Additionally, participants who submit their abstracts in both English and French are automatically entered in a random draw for our Translation Award! Submissions using an online translator will not be considered for this draw.
