Statistical Hacking to Optimize Community Supports and Food Security
BISS is partnering with Southern Ontario non-profit community groups to run a supported hackathon focused on food security and improving resource allocation to meet changing demographics. This hybrid between workshop and hackathon includes instruction on communicating with non-technical partners, and support/instruction to help you come up with useful answers under a tight timeline. Participants operate in a team hackathon environment solving a problem for non-technical community folks who are present to provide the problem and support data context inquiry. Technical tools and methods will be provided along the way by the workshop facilitators. This is an active workshop appropriate for all levels from undergraduates to professors, A.Stat, P.Stat, and other professionals. Bring a laptop and boost your resume while learning data science skills and solving problems for the community.
Participants will develop skills in:
- Working with Canadian census and other datasets
- Communication with technical and non-technical partners
- Breaking down a big problem into achievable goals under a tight timeline
- Fine tuning models with domain expertise
