Time is Brain: Lessons on Statistical Collaborations in a Fast-Paced Multidisciplinary World of Acute Stroke
The practice of biostatistics in multidisciplinary environments is exciting, professionally gratifying, and filled with several opportunities for a rewarding career. However, biostatisticians who work in these settings often operate in two different worlds (statistics vs applied research) while managing differences in expectations, cultures, responsibilities, and opportunities. They typically navigate several challenges, such as communication, managing workloads, negotiating power imbalances, reconciling competing work expectations, fostering relationships, developing contextual research knowledge, developing leadership roles. In this talk, I will share my experience working as the lead statistician for a world-class stroke program to support several ground-breaking studies and trials for acute stroke interventions. Lessons on important personal and professional skills needed to thrive in such a fast-paced multidisciplinary setting will be discussed.
