Research and personal experience indicate one of the challenges in implementing many of the approaches known to be effective for learning (such as repeated testing, group work, distributed practice, and in-class activities) is that they are unpopular with some students. The main issue is that such approaches are effortful for students and may appear, superficially at least, less efficient than being told information. Described are tactics to overcome student objections, including the sharing of evidence about the methods adopted, information about student performances, and arguments to address concerns.
