Engaging Methods: Biostatistics ReseArch with Caregivers, and patiEnts (EMBRACE) Project

This case study explores effective approaches for engaging patients and families as partners in biostatistical methods research. Following an initial grey literature review, our team identified existing engagement tools developed in the United Kingdom and invited three experienced patient and family advisors to assess their relevance. Together, we selected a case study approach and recruited two additional patient partners without prior experience in biostatistics. These partners, along with one experienced advisor, are collaborating on a project—designing a single patient trial that utilizes antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) as a promising therapy for rare neurogenetic disorders. Early discussions focused on introducing the research context, gathering initial feedback, and identifying patient driven priorities to inform the direction of the work. In the next phase, we will engage the same patient and caregiver advisors to inform the statistical design of this N-of-1-trial.

Engagement et méthodes participatives en recherche innovante en statistique avec les engagés (patients et leurs proches) EMPRISE

Cette étude de cas explore les approches efficaces pour impliquer les patients et leurs familles en tant que partenaires dans la recherche sur les méthodes biostatistiques. Après une première analyse de la littérature grise, notre équipe a identifié les outils d'engagement existants développés au Royaume-Uni et a invité trois conseillers expérimentés, patients et familles, à évaluer leur pertinence. Ensemble, nous avons choisi une approche par étude de cas et avons recruté deux autres patients partenaires sans expérience préalable en biostatistique. Ces partenaires, ainsi qu'un conseiller expérimenté, collaborent à un projet visant à concevoir un essai clinique unique utilisant des oligonucléotides antisens (ASO) comme traitement prometteur pour des troubles neurogénétiques rares. Les premières discussions ont porté sur la présentation du contexte de la recherche, la collecte des premiers commentaires et l'identification des priorités des patients afin d'orienter les travaux. Dans la phase suivante, nous ferons appel aux mêmes conseillers patients et soignants pour éclairer la conception statistique de cet essai « N-of-1 ».
