The Design and Use of Shiny Apps for Teaching Introductory Statistics Courses
In most introductory statistics courses, a wide spectrum of topics to deliver leaves the instructor limited room for introducing statistical language like R at the same time. In addition, most students in these courses have no prior computer coding experience. Consequently, learning both statistics and mastering R coding skills can be overwhelming for most students, which can also be a big challenge for instructors as well. Furthermore, most students in these courses either have little math background or are not very mathematically inclined. In many social science and life science majors, students report a high level of statistics anxiety. To address all the challenges, we design and create a collection of Fun Apps of Statistical Tools (FAST) with R Shiny Apps. A quick review of these fun apps will be introduced in this talk, and examples of how to use them to create online quizzes and homework assignments will be also illustrated.
