Tier II Canada Research Chair in Applied Mathematics and Optimization

The Faculty of Science at Thompson Rivers University invites applications for a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Applied Mathematics and Optimization. The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in the areas of Applied Mathematics, Operations Research or Statistics (or Engineering with strong background of Mathematics or Statistics) and expertise in mathematical or statistical modelling, optimization, industrial engineering, operations research, management science or a related field. The Faculty of Science offers degrees with majors in Biology, Chemistry, Computing Science, Mathematics, Natural Resource Science, Physics and Respiratory Therapy as well as a Master of Science degree in Environmental Science. Research interests and expertise within the Faculty of Science are diverse and provide the Chair with opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. Working closely with TRU's Centre for Optimization and Decision Science, the Chair will inherit a strong interdisciplinary network within the university and enhanced opportunities to conduct applied research with industry partners and other regional, national and international organizations. The Chair will actively recruit and supervise graduate students, build a dynamic research team, and attract external funding.

Applications should include: (1) a detailed curriculum vitae, (2) a cover letter with a statement of the applicant's qualifications of relevance and the applicant's expected contribution to the University, faculty and department, (3) a detailed description of the candidate's proposed research program, including a statement on the potential for the research program consistent with the focus of the CRC and to contribute to Thompson Rivers University's strategic research directions, (4) samples of relevant published writing, (5) a statement of teaching interests and educational philosophy, and any evidence of teaching effectiveness, and (6) names and contact information for three people willing to provide a reference.

Requirements:

The successful candidate for nomination should have an excellent funding and publication record, a strong educational background in applied mathematics and optimization and the ability to attract excellent graduate students. Tier II CRCs are "exceptional emerging researchers" who are at an early phase of their careers (i.e., within 10 years of having completed their PhD), have demonstrated the promise of a strong research profile, the potential to be leaders in their field, and an established record of attracting competitively awarded research funding, including Canadian Tri-Agency or similar national or international funding. The candidate selected for this position will be supported by and required to work with the Faculty, the Senate Research Committee, and the Office of Research and Graduate Studies to prepare the formal nomination to the CRC Secretariat according to CRC program guidelines.
