The Warren Centre for Actuarial Studies and Research is seeking qualified applicants for a tenure-track or tenured Associate or Full Professor for the Dr. LAH. Warren Chair in Actuarial Science, I.H. Asper School of Business, University of Manitoba. The Warren Chair is an endowed Chair funded by both corporate and individual donors from the insurance and actuarial communities.  

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in actuarial science, statistics, or related field and have an exemplary teaching and research record in actuarial science. Ideally, applicants will possess a professional actuarial qualification, or be well-advanced toward accreditation (FCAS, FCIA, FSA). Salary is market competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2018, or sooner. The applicant should have a proven ability to develop an internationally recognized research program funded by government agencies and industry, excellent communication skills, and a strong commitment to teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The applicant will be expected to provide leadership, mentorship and strategic direction in actuarial science to the Warren Centre, the Asper School, actuarial and business community, and will also provide direction and contribute to raising the profile and visibility of the Warren Centre. The applicant will also be expected to supervise research at all levels, contribute to the development and evolution of courses and programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and assist with the actuarial accreditation, as needed.

The University of Manitoba is located in Winnipeg, a cosmopolitan city with a population of 780,000. Winnipeg is a culturally diverse community and is known for its variety of accessible amenities, activities and events. The city has all the facilities of a major centre, but with the atmosphere of a smaller, friendlier city. Established in 1877, the University of Manitoba is a large and dynamic institution of higher education and boasts a community of approximately 29,000 students, 3,800 academic staff, and 4,600 non-academic staff. The I. H. Asper School of Business is the principal business school in the province of Manitoba and is accredited by AACSB. The School offers undergraduate, MBA, M.Sc. and PhD degrees. The Asper School is a research intensive institution comprised of approximately 56 full-time faculty members publishing in leading academic journals and has approximately 1,600 undergraduate students, 130 MBA students, 35 MSc students, and 24 PhD students.

Located in the Warren Centre for Actuarial Studies and Research, the Actuarial program is offered jointly with the Department of Statistics. The program offers an undergraduate and MSc programs in Actuarial Mathematics. In addition, the department has several interdisciplinary Ph.D. students. This Actuarial Program is one of the oldest in North America with actuarial courses being offered since 1912. Over 700 graduates have become either Associates or Fellows of the Society of Actuaries, Casualty Actuarial Society, or Canadian Institute of Actuaries. Substantial research funding is provided for new faculty members. The Warren Centre has been recognized as a Centre of Actuarial Excellence by the Society of Actuaries since 2009, and accredited by the Canadian Institute of Actuaries under its University Accreditation Program since 2011.

Position Responsibilities include:
  • Provide leadership, mentorship and strategic direction in actuarial studies to the Warren Centre, the Asper School of Business, actuarial business and community;
  • Undertake research in actuarial science (there are research funds associated with the Chair);
  • Provide direction and contribute to raising the profile and visibility of the Warren Centre.
  • Teach a range of actuarial courses (2 courses per year);
  • Stimulate research and collaboration within the Warren Centre and the facility;
  • Participate in community outreach; and
  • Provide service for the School, University and community.
 
Selection Criteria include:
  • Related PhD;
  • Actuarial researcher and educator who is at the forefront of the actuarial discipline;
  • Exemplary research record; and
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fellowship in a professional actuarial society (FCAS, FCIA, FSA) is preferred
