The SSC congratulates members Augustine Wigle (Wilfrid Laurier University) and Audrey Béliveau (University of Waterloo) for winning the 2026 ASA Outstanding Statistical Application Award for their paper "Estimating methane emissions from the upstream oil and gas industry using a multi-stage framework", published in JRSS-A (available open access).

Agnes Herzberg died in Kingston, Ontario on June 2, 2026, at the age of 87. She made wide-ranging and remarkable contributions as a researcher, a promoter of statistics, science and public policy, a patron of the arts, and in professional service. In 1991-92 she served as the Statistical Society of Canada’s first female president.

"Mary Thompson has transformed statistical science through advances in survey methodology and public policy research. This University of Waterloo professor made major contributions to the International Tobacco Control Project, advised national agencies and helped found the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute. She also champions women in the mathematical and statistical sciences."
