This is full-time position is available at the Canadian VIGOUR Centre (CVC).  The CVC is an academic research organization (ARO) located on the University of Alberta campus. The CVC specializes in managing clinical trials of cardiovascular therapies from study design through to manuscript publication.
 
The successful incumbent will report directly to Dr. Padma Kaul, Professor in the Division of Cardiology. Dr. Kaul’s research is centered on the following themes: comparing international practice patterns and outcomes related to cardiovascular disease; examining population-level issues related to access and delivery of cardiovascular care; and examining the economic impact of new health technologies.
 
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
 
  • Generate statistical analysis plans and statistical sections for study synopses, protocols and grants
  • Perform and interpret basic and advanced analyses 
  • Document analyses, create summaries, and present results in written and verbal form to the research team
  • Present orally on key statistical methods, operational issues, study results, or the project status to key internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop and/or learn new statistical methods and application of these to future projects
  • Assist in providing guidance to data analysts and data managers and co-supervise students and/or medical trainees
  • Ensure that resources are used effectively to meet time and budget constraints
  • Participate in the performance management of junior members (e.g., junior biostatisticians, data analysts/programmers)
  • Write SAS and/or R code, identify and correct errors, and validate output and results
  • Present information on topics relevant to statistics and statistical operations at internal statistics meetings
  • Oversee multiple projects including conducting population-level analyses using large administrative databases from the provincial health department; conducting secondary analyses of multinational clinical trials; and developing statistical methods to better address research objectives
  • Set program objectives as related to the statistical nature of the research (projects) including overseeing data collection, analysis and results
  • Responsible of quality assurance of statistical output
Qualifications:
 
  • PhD in (bio)statistics or related field and 2 years relevant experience preferred; Masters degree in (bio)statistics or related field and 6 years relevant work experience is required
  • High proficiency in programming and analysis using major statistical packages (such as SAS and/or R) is required; Familiarity with data management is an asset
  • Proven experience with statistical methods commonly used in health research (e.g., survival analyses, logistic regression, prognostic model development and validation, competing risks/multi-state modeling, propensity score and inverse probability weighting, and multi-level modeling) required
  • Proven ability to work well independently and as part of a research team
  • A solid command of the English language, written and verbal
  • Attention to detail and excellent time management skills
In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position has an initial appointment of one year with the possibility of extension, and offers a comprehensive benefits package and annual salary range of $66,393 to $74,697 commensurate with experience.
