Online Homework Impact in an Introductory Statistics Course
This study examines the impact on student success rates using online homework in the areas of statistics. Students whose performance is utilized in this study are taking introductory-level undergraduate statistics courses, with mostly no prior instruction at this level. Although textbook publishers offer course management systems, they do so to promote brand loyalty, and while an open-source tool such as MyOpenMath is promising. It is designed for mathematics and statistics, providing delivery of homework, quizzes, and tests with rich mathematical content. Students can receive immediate feedback on algorithmically generated questions with numerical or algebraic expression answers. A survey was conducted to gather data on students' attitudes and practices related to online homework, and these data have been linked to course outcomes. The results indicate that online assignments increase student performance and that students believe that using online homework is a useful study method.
