Data and Knowledge: Considerations for Working with Data from Indigenous People
Working with data from Indigenous people requires additional sensitivity and considerations, over and above the usual ethical ones. Formal data governance agreements between Indigenous groups and researchers outline the responsibilities and expectations, as well as processes to be followed that have implications for statisticians working with their data. When collaborating with First Nations (FN) groups, the principles of ownership, control, access, and possession (OCAP®) need to be adopted across all aspects of a study. How these principles were implemented by a research team in a recent co-led project will be described. Strategies for success included training in OCAP® for the statisticians as well as sharing of results in FN community gatherings to understand their meaning. Learning about Indigenous ways of knowing can expand statisticians’ perspectives on knowledge from data.
