Angelo Canty
Distinguished Service Award
2026

The Distinguished Service Award is awarded to a person who has made substantial contributions to the running or welfare of SSC, over a period of several years. A recipient of the Distinguished Service Award must be a member of the SSC.

Angelo Canty grew up in the small town of Midleton on the south coast of Ireland and received his BSc in Statistics and Computer Science from University College, Cork. In 1990, he came to Canada to attend graduate school at the University of Toronto, where he earned his MSc and PhD under the supervision of Nancy Reid. After postdoctoral positions at the University of Oxford and Swiss Federal Technology Institute of Lausanne under the guidance of Anthony Davison, he returned to a tenure track position at Concordia in Montreal. In 2001, he moved to his current position at McMaster University.

One of the first service positions that Angelo took on was as Program Secretary for the Statistical Society of Montreal. After moving to Ontario, he became more involved in service to the SSC and the wider statistical community. From 2002-2006, he was an Ontario representative on the SSC Board, and from 2003-2009, he was president of the Southern Ontario Chapter of the American Statistical Association. In 2006, Angelo was elected to the role of Public Relations Officer of the SSC. As part of that role, he was heavily involved in the transition of the Canadian Journal of Statistics (CJS) to Wiley, and from 2010-2012 he served as Managing Editor of the CJS. Angelo has continued his involvement in SSC service throughout his career and served on many SSC committees as well as committees for the Fields Institute and the International Genetic Epidemiology Society. In 2019, Angelo was appointed as the Electronic Services Manager of the SSC, a role he continues to hold in 2026.

The SSC annual meeting has always held a special significance for Angelo. He attended his first meeting as a graduate student in 1993 and has missed only one meeting since returning to Canada in 1998. He was a member of the Local Arrangements Committee for the 2002 meeting at McMaster. He has produced the pdf copy of the meeting program every year since 2020. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual meeting moved online, and Angelo was a member of the Virtual Organizing Committee for the 2021 and 2022 meetings. He is the co-chair of the Local Arrangements Committee responsible for bringing the 2026 annual meeting back to McMaster.

Throughout his service career with the SSC, Angelo has been privileged to have had some excellent service mentors, including Nancy Reid, Yogendra Chaubey, Peter Macdonald, Hugh Chipman, and Shirley Mills. He has also benefited enormously from the dedicated staff in the SSC Office, who continue to keep the Society and its electronic services running smoothly.  He is immensely grateful to all of these individuals.
