SARGC Comic Strip Competition: Three prizes to win!
Are you a student or recent graduate wanting an entertaining way to participate in the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC)? Then, submit a comic strip to the SSC student and recent graduate committee (SARGC) for its inaugural Comic Strip Competition. Potential topics are as follows: (a) common misconceptions in statistics; (b) the societal impact of statistics; and (c) other statistics-related topics of your choosing. Judges focus less on content depth and more on clarity, creativity, and impact. Prizes will be awarded for first ($100), second ($75), and third ($50) place.
Criteria
To be eligible for one of three prizes, your submission must satisfy the following criteria:
- As of January 1, 2024, participants: (a) must be registered in a Canadian university in a program related to statistics, biostatistics, or actuarial science; or (b) must have graduated within 2 years from one of these said programs.
- Participants may work individually or in pairs, but they may only submit one comic strip.
- The comic strip should have 2–8 frames.
- You are free to design your comic strip as you wish. You may find it helpful to consult free software that can be used to create comic strips—such as Canva (tutorial), MakeBeliefsComix (tutorial), and Microsoft PowerPoint or Publisher.
- Please register yourself (or your pair) for the competition using this registration form and submit your comic by email to the SARGC (sargc.survey@gmail.com) in PDF format by Sunday, March 3, 2024 @ 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time). In this email, we ask that you mention any software or cite any copyrighted images that you used to create your comic.
- This spring, the winning comic strips will be showcased publicly in the SSC Liaison newsletter and on the SARGC social media pages (Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook); please ensure that your comic strip is appropriate for all ages. Any images used should follow all applicable copyright laws and should therefore be credited. If we suspect your comic strip includes uncredited copyrighted media, it may be disqualified.
Judging
Comic strips will be judged based on whether they satisfy the competition criteria and based on comprehension, communication, and creativity. A judging grid is provided here. For any other questions, please contact the SARGC members at sargc.survey@gmail.com.
