Sir David Cox

The Statistical Society of Canada is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Sir David Cox on January 18, 2022. Sir David was a uniquely influential statistician whose impact on our subject cannot be overstated. In a career spanning almost 75 years, he made seminal contributions to the study of stochastic processes, the foundations of statistical theory, statistical methodology, and many areas of science and social science. He was famous and famously modest, and exceptionally generous with his time and encouragement, especially for students and early career scholars.

Sir David was a good friend to many members of the Statistical Society of Canada. He visited Canada often, held honorary doctorates from the University of Waterloo, the University of Toronto, and Queen’s University, and was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

More information is available through Nuffield College. A fuller obituary will be published in Liaison in due course.
