Data is a powerful storyteller. In particular, census data depict Canada’s changing mosaic—giving us facts on where we came from, where we are, and where we are heading. Canadians depend on key socioeconomic trends and analysis from the census to make important decisions that affect their families, their neighbourhoods, and their businesses.

In preparation for the 2021 Census, the Statistical Society of Canada partnered with Statistics Canada for the My Census Story contest. From March 22 to April 11, 2021, students across the country were given the opportunity to be heard by sharing how they have used statistical or census data in their day-to-day life, and were invited to participate in a census challenge to convince Canadians why they should complete the census.

After rigorous evaluation by a panel of judges comprised of members from the Statistical Society of Canada and Statistics Canada, we are pleased to reveal the top three submissions to the My Census Story contest. Please join us in congratulating:

• Priya Patel from Brampton, Ontario!

The SSC fundraising committee represented the SSC to take part in this contest while the SSC contributed a total of $400 for the three prize winners. We loved hearing about the different ways students use statistical or census data to make informed decisions, and why you believe that all Canadians should complete their census questionnaire.
