Letters Patent Confering the SSC Arms

Coat of Arms of the SSCTo all to whom these Presents shall come or whom the same may in anyway concern, GREETING!

WHEREAS Geoffrey John Charles Hole, Bachelor of Arts of Carleton University in Ottawa, Bachelor of Science and holder of the Diploma in Statistics of the Victoria University of Manchester, Master of Science in Statistics of the University of London in England, Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and of the Institute of Statisticians, President of the STATISTICAL SOCIETY OF CANADA, has represented to the Chief Herald of Canada that a body corporate and politic under the name of the Statistical Science Association of Canada was incorporated on the 20th day of July 1972 by Letters Patent of the Honourable the Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, which Letters Patent were amended on the 11th day of June 1977 when this Association united with the Canadian Statistical Society to form the STATISTICAL SOCIETY OF CANADA, which Society has and does now act to foster pure and applied statistical research, to encourage sound statistical practice, and to address statistical aspects of issues and matters of public policy;

AND WHEREAS a Warrant has been received from Lieutenant General François Richard, Commander of the Order of Military Merit, Officer of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, upon whom has been conferred the Canadian Forces Decoration, deputy Herald Chancellor of the Canadian Heraldic Authority dated the 8th day of May 1990 authorizing the Chief Herald of Canada to grant to the STATISTICAL SOCIETY OF CANADA such armorial bearings as he deems fitting and appropriate;

NOW KNOW YOU that pursuant to the authority vested in His Excellency the Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, a Member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Chancellor and Principal Companion of the Order of Canada, Chancellor and Commander of the Order of Military Merit upon whom has been conferred the Canadian Forces Decoration, one of Her Majesty's Counsel learned in the Law, Governor General and Commander in-Chief of Canada, to exercise the armorial prerogative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as Queen of Canada by Letters Patent dated the 4th day of June 1988, and the terms of my Commission of Office, I, the Chief Herald of Canada do by these Presents grant and assign to the STATISTICAL SOCIETY OF CANADA the following Arms: A Latin square chequy of nine Gules and Argent per bend reversed counterchanged each chequer Argent charged with a maple leaf Gules; And for a Crest: Above a helmet mantled Gules doubled Argent within a wreath Argent and Gules a Snowy Owl (Nyctea scandiaca) proper holding in its dexter talon a flash of lightning Gules; And for a Motto: SCIENTIA SAPIENTIA CONSILIUM; All of which armorial bearings are more plainly depicted on the painting herewith provided and entered in Volume II, page 12 of the Public Register of Arms, Flags and Badges of Canada to be borne and used for ever hereafter by the STATISTICAL SOCIETY OF CANADA according to the Law of Arms of Canada;

GIVEN under my hand and the seal of the Canadian Heraldic Authority at Rideau Hall in the City of Ottawa this fourteenth day of May in the year of Our Lord One thousand nine hundred and ninety, in the first year of His Excellency's service in office and in the thirty-ninth year of Her Majesty's reign.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF the Herald Chancellor, Léopold Henri Amyot, and the Deputy Herald Chancellor, Lieutenant-General François Richard, have witnessed this action with their signatures.
