Lessons Learned while Developing Statistical Methods to Better Understand the Ocean and its Inhabitants
I begin with a heterogenous mix of examples from my own research that demonstrate both the utility of statistical methods for improving our understanding of the ocean and its inhabitants, and the need for further developments. In doing so I provide descriptions of two very common sources of marine data: fisheries catches and surveys, and marine animal tracking systems. I conclude by highlighting statistical problems on the immediate ocean research horizon, and the technical challenges they pose.
