Department of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research
Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research is a research-intensive department of CancerControl Alberta whose Research Scientists are conducting cutting-edge population-based cancer research in the etiology and prevention of cancer. Their research spans the disciplines of biostatistics, cancer surveillance, molecular and genetic cancer epidemiology, nutritional and physical activity epidemiology, occupational and environmental epidemiology, and patient-reported outcomes. Some current studies focus on: the role of physical activity in cancer prevention, rehabilitation and survival; estimation of population attributable risks for modifiable lifestyle factors; improvement of occupational carcinogen exposure assessment; and statistical methods for studies involving ordinal response data. An emerging area of research interest within the group is the study of biomarkers, including inflammatory, metabolomics, and hormones, as markers of various exposure, health and disease states.
This Statistical Associate position is a full-time 12-month temporary position subject to renewal. The Statistical Associate will be part of an established research support team that includes other MSc-trained biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and data management specialists. Career advancement opportunities are available within our team for individuals who demonstrate interest and ability to work at advanced technical and leadership levels. As part of ongoing professional development, the Statistical Associate will also have access to a support and educational network including working collaboratively with researchers and other statisticians, access to a SAS User Group, and monthly meetings with other research-based staff to discuss statistical and research ideas. She/he will have opportunities for further continuing education, such as attending software programming or methods workshops, weekly seminars and rounds, journal clubs and other professional development opportunities.
The successful candidate will work on a variety of biostatistical and cancer epidemiologic research studies and will work on several concurrent tasks/projects. Independent judgment, attention to detail, ability to learn new methods and strong problem-solving skills will be essential in performing the job duties. Sophisticated data processing and data analysis skills will be required. Additional data analyses will involve modelling survival data analysis, generalized linear models, structural equation models and multivariate methods.
Job responsibilities include:
• manipulating large and complex data sets;
• programming and/or implementing new statistical methods in SAS and/or R;
• conducting data quality checks on SQL databases, making and logging corrections;
• conducting basic and advanced statistical analyses;
• documenting data analysis steps;
• preparing written summaries of data analyses that include figures and tables, as needed for scientific publications and presentations.
• Master’s degree in Biostatistics or Statistics with advanced programming skills;
• Demonstrated ability to work with large, complex data sets stored in SQL databases;
• Expert in use of SAS (SAS Certification an asset), with advanced programming in R;
• Minimum one year experience applying statistical analysis methods in a health work place setting;
• A. Stat. or P. Stat. Accreditation is desirable;
• Excellent communication skills including advanced written and spoken English skills;
• Ability to work collaboratively with members of an interdisciplinary team;
• Knowledge and experience with epidemiologic and biostatistical studies is an asset.
• Experience with, or interest in, gaining skills in data science is an asset.
