CANSSI Collaborative Research Teams—Call for Letters of Intent

CANSSI is calling for letters of intent for the Collaborative Research Team program (CRT). The CRT program fosters research and training interactions that span disciplines and institutions in order to tackle complex problems of broad importance for science, engineering, health, and society.

The deadline for letters of intent is May 7, 2021.

The timeline for a CRT project is 3 years. CANSSI support will be $200–240K. Detailed instructions for a letter of intent are available online. Please contact CANSSI’s director Don Estep if you want to discuss your submission before the deadline.

Graduate Student Exchange Scholarships

The CANSSI Graduate Student Exchange Scholarship (CANSSI-GSES) program is designed to foster acquisition of new knowledge and skill sets, provide exposure to new areas of research and application, encourage co-discovery of new statistical methodology, provide co-supervision of thesis research, and create new and/or strengthen existing collaborations. There are two variations.

  1. Visiting Scholarships support master's and PhD students enrolled in statistics, biostatistics, or actuarial science at one Canadian university to work closely with a faculty member in statistics, biostatistics, or actuarial science of another Canadian university for an extended period of time (2–4 months).
  2. Applied Immersion Scholarships support PhD students enrolled at a Canadian university to undertake an immersive interdisciplinary or applied experience with a faculty sponsor outside of statistics, biostatistics, or actuarial science.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis but should be sent at least 2 months prior to the start of the proposed exchange. See our website for more details.

CANSSI Annual General Meeting and Town Hall—Save the date!

This year’s annual general meeting will take place via video conference on Friday, June 4, 2021 from 9:00–10:00 PDT. Meeting agenda and materials will be available soon.

Picture a Scientist

CANSSI is thrilled to host a screening of the movie Picture a Scientist. Featured at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2020, the Boston Globe called it "quietly devastating" and WGBH found it a "frightening and fascinating examination of bias." This movie takes viewers on a journey into the experiences of biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring.

When you register for this film, you’ll have a 72-hour window from May 14–16, 2021 in which to watch the film. Visit our website to learn more about how to register.

This event is part of our new IDEA programming. Look for more events coming soon!
