Assistant and Associate Professor
Department of Statistics

Located in the thriving, multicultural city of Winnipeg, the University of Manitoba offers students and faculty a vibrant learning community, exceptional facilities and the chance to explore ideas, challenge assumptions and turn theory into reality. Our researchers are among the best in the world, finding new ways to protect the environment, improve human health, advance technology and strengthen communities in Canada and beyond. With more than 30,000 students, faculty, and staff, and over 90 degree programs, the University of Manitoba plays a key role in the social, cultural, and economic well-being of our community and our world.

The Department of Statistics at the University of Manitoba invites applications for two tenure-track positions — one (#13846) at the rank of Assistant Professor and the other (#13847) at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The appointments will begin on July 1, 2012, or on a mutually agreed upon date. Individuals with expertise in any area of statistics are encouraged to apply, although it would be an asset for a candidate to have research strengths in one or more areas identified in the Department’s strategic research plan. These areas include biostatistics, computational statistics, environmental statistics, generalized linear models, spatial statistics, statistical image analysis and other areas that complement the existing research strengths of the Department. Candidates with strong records of collaboration with researchers in other disciplines are also encouraged to apply. To be successful, a candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in statistics or a related discipline (or, for an Assistant Professor position, a Ph.D. degree to be completed by the starting date) and have a strong record or outstanding promise in both research and teaching. Duties will include research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, student supervision, and service-related activities. An individual who is hired at the Associate Professor level will be expected to play a leadership role in research.

Founded in 1967, the Department of Statistics at the University of Manitoba has a long and rich history. The Department currently has 15 academic members, with research interests in various areas of statistics and probability. The Department has active B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs focusing on both theory and applications. The successful applicants will find that this is an exciting time to join the Department. Most faculty members have joined the Department within the past decade and it is an ideal time for new faculty members to contribute to the reshaping of the Department’s research and teaching programs.
