Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Computational Probability
The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science and the Department of Mathematics at Simon Fraser University invite applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment in Computational Probability at the Assistant Professor rank to commence September 1, 2020 (flexible). Any areas of expertise will be considered, but among the areas of particular interest are: applied probability, stochastic processes, high-dimensional inference, stochastic optimization, and modelling. The successful candidate will hold a joint appointment in the two departments.
Candidates must have a PhD in Statistics, Mathematics or a closely related field, outstanding research record or potential, and evidence of excellence in teaching. We encourage applications from candidates who will actively engage in both departments and will collaborate with other scientists who have data and/or work in related research areas. Candidates must also have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
The primary responsibilities of the position include developing and maintaining an active, externally funded research program; teaching a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses in both departments; and participating in departmental, university, and professional service. The successful candidate will also be expected to supervise students in our Master’s and PhD programs.

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science is comprised of 18 continuing faculty members in Statistics, and five in Actuarial Science. The department is recognized internationally for its research strengths in developing methodology for the statistical and data sciences. It is also the new permanent home of the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute (CANSSI). The Department of Mathematics comprises 42 faculty with a broad range of research and teaching interests, with a focus on computational mathematics and growing strength in data science. Both Departments are internationally recognized for their academic excellence.
