Professor Carl-Erik Särndal retired from the Université de Montréal in June 1997 where he had worked for most of his professional career. He has made important contributions to the theory and applications of statistical survey methods with work that has been influential both on the theoretical development and on statisticians working in statistical agencies. The methods that he pioneered have been made widely available through statistical software developed at Statistics Canada. Carl has also been very active in various national and international committees and as a graduate supervisor.
“For his outstanding contributions to the development and application of model assisted survey methods, in particular in the use of generalized regression estimation and calibration to incorporate auxiliary information in survey estimates, and the broad influence these have had on the practice of survey methodology in statistical agencies, especially Statistics Canada; for service to the Canadian and international statistical communities.”
