Professor Vidyadhar P. Godambe obtained his Ph.D. from the University of London in 1958. He came to North America in the mid-1960s, settling at the University of Waterloo in 1967 where he remains as a Professor Emeritus. Prior to his retirement and after, Professor Godambe has been a regular visitor at the University of Poona, the area where he is from in India. Professor Godambe is renowned both in Canada and around the world for his path-breaking work in the foundations of survey sampling and in the area of estimating functions, editing a book on this latter topic for Oxford University Press in 1991. He is well known for his keen mind and penetrating questions. Professor Godambe is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. He has published extensively in major statistical journals. In 1987, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Statistical Society of Canada. At the SSC Annual Meeting this year, a session was held in honour of Professor Godambe’s 75th birthday.
