Dr. Yong You is the recipient of the 2000 Pierre Robillard Award for the best doctoral thesis defended at a Canadian university in 1999, written in the fields covered by the Canadian Journal of Statistics. His thesis, entitled “Hierarchical Bayes and related methods for model-based small area estimation”, was written under the supervision of Professor J.N.K. Rao in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Carleton University.

The members of the Pierre Robillard Committee were Mary Lesperance (Chair), Richard Lockhart, Harold Mantel and Ernest Monga. The committee members were charged with choosing the best thesis based on the originality of ideas and techniques, the possible applications and their treatment, and the potential impact on the statistical sciences. You is currently employed at Statistics Canada. His thesis received two other awards: Carleton University Senate Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement (1999) and Ottawa-Carleton Mathematical Institute Prize for Best Ph.D. Thesis (1999).
